Game Notes: #2 UVA basketball at Syracuse on Big Monday

  • UVa ranks first nationally in scoring defense at 50.1 points per game, which is the third lowest average in the shot clock era (since 1986).
  • UVa is first in the ACC at 15-1, while Syracuse is sixth at 9-7.
  • Virginia’s 27-1 record ties its best start in school history (27-1 start in 1981-82).
  • Virginia has 15 or more ACC wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.
  • UVa has held its opponents to fewer than 50 points in five of the last seven games.
  • UVa guard Justin Anderson fractured a finger on his left hand on Feb. 7 and is out 4-6 weeks.

UVa Ranked No. 2/3 in Latest National Polls

  • UVa is ranked Nos. 2 and 3 in the AP and USA Today coaches’ polls.
  • The Cavaliers were ranked No. 2 in both polls from Jan. 12-Feb. 1.
  • Prior to this year, the Cavaliers achieved their last No. 2 ranking on March 8, 1983.
  • Virginia has delivered three of the 13 home losses by teams currently ranked in the top 17 of this week’s AP poll (Notre Dame, North Carolina, Maryland) and the Cavaliers’ four road wins over current top 25 teams lead the nation.
  • The Cavaliers have been ranked in the top 10 for the first 17 weeks of the season for the first time since 1982-83.
  • The No. 9 AP preseason ranking was UVa’s best since a No. 1 ranking to start the 1982-83 season.
  • UVa is one of three teams (Duke and Arizona) that have been ranked in the top 10 for 19 straight weeks dating back to last season.

Virginia All-Time vs. Syracuse

  • UVa is 2-3 all-time, including a 1-0 mark in ACC play, vs. Syracuse in the series that dates back to 1983-84.
  • The Cavaliers meet the Orange for the lone regular season meeting.
  • Last season, UVa defeated then-No. 4 Syracuse 75-56 on March 1, 2014, to secure its first outright ACC regular-season title since 1980-81.
  • The Cavaliers are 0-1 against the Orange in Syracuse, losing 73-70 to the Orange on Nov. 28, 2008 at the Carrier Dome.
  • Head coach Tony Bennett is 1-0 all-time against Syracuse.

 

Last Time vs. The Orange

  • Malcolm Brogdon had a career-high 19 points as Virginia stormed to the ACC regular season title in a 75-56 win over then-No. 4 Syracuse on March 1, 2014.
  • Akil Mitchell added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Mike Tobey and Justin Anderson had 11 points apiece.
  • C.J. Fair and Tyler Ennis led Syracuse with 13 points each, while Trevor Cooney added 12.
  • Virginia trailed 28-27 at the half, but outscored the Orange 48-28 in the second half to post the win.
  • The Cavaliers shot 50 percent from the floor (27-of-54) and 3-point range (8-of-16).
  • The Cavaliers held a 34-24 advantage in the paint and enjoyed a 21-10 margin in second-chance points.
  • London Perrantes handed out a game-high seven assists.

 

Last Time Out

  • Malcolm Brogdon tallied 19 points and Anthony Gill and Darion added 16 points apiece as No. 2 Virginia topped Virginia Tech 69-57 in ACC action on Feb. 28.
