Game Notes: #10 William and Mary football at #4 New Hampshire

wm-logoAfter a bye week, the No. 10/11 William and Mary football team will return to action when it plays at No. 4/6 new hampshire on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The top-10 showdown will be televised live nationally on NBC Sports Network.

In addition to the nationally televised broadcast, live video of the contest will be available online atnbcsports.com, while live audio and live stats will be available at TribeAthletics.com. Fans can also listen to the live broadcast on the Tribe’s flagship stations 92.3 FM The Tide and 107.9 Bach FM.

Tickets can be purchased at TribeAthletics.com or by calling the ticket office at 757-221-3340.

Saturday’s game will mark the 18th meeting between W&M (4-1, 1-0) and UNH (4-1, 2-0), as the Tribe holds a 14-3 advantage in the all-time series and has won 10 of the last 11 matchups. Additionally, W&M owns a 5-2 mark in games played in Durham.

Both teams enter this weekend’s contest on four-game winning streaks with their lone losses coming against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents. The Wildcats feature one of the nation’s top passing attacks and are averaging 304.2 yards per game through the air, while W&M has allowed more than 300 passing yards just four times since the start of the 2007 season – a span of 87 games.

A key to the Tribe’s last four victories against new hampshire has been the defense’s ability to slow down UNH’s rushing attack. During that stretch, the Wildcats have averaged just 61.3 rushing yards per game (245 yds/116 carries) and just 2.1 yards per carry. In the Tribe’s lone loss to UNH in its last five meetings, the Wildcats totaled 207 rushing yards on 41 carries (5.0 ypc).

Interestingly, Saturday will mark the sixth anniversary of one of W&M’s greatest comebacks, as it rallied back from a 14-point second half deficit to defeat No. 4 UNH, 38-34, on Oct. 11, 2008 in Durham, N.H. After trailing 21-7 in the third quarter, quarterback Jake Phillips’ 17-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to wide receiver D.J. McAulay with 0:22 remaining in the fourth quarter helped W&M earn the victory. The 14-point second half comeback is tied for the fifth-best comeback in school history dating back through 1970.
