Former UVA swimming standout Matt McLean (Class of 2011) won the men’s 200-meter freestyle national title at the Phillips 66 National Championships Thursday (Aug. 7) at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex.
McLean, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the men’s 4x200m free relay, captured the national championship in a time of 1:46.93. With the win, McLean will represent the United States at the Pan Pacific Championships, to be held Aug. 21-25 in Gold Coast, Australia. It is McLean’s second national title (400m free in 2011).
In the women’s 200m free, rising sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished third in a personal-best time of 1:57.57. Smith will also head to Australia to represent Team USA in the Pan Pac Champs.
The meet continues through Saturday, Aug. 10.
