Former Richmond Spiders Darrius Garrett, Josh Duinker sign new pro basketball contracts
Garrett begins his fourth professional season in Poland with Stal Ostrow. He most recently competed for Afyon in the Turkish Basketball League, where he averaged 12.5 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per contest. Garrett has played in Greece and Italy in previous seasons, and in 2012-13, he earned the Eurobasket.com All-Swiss LNA Defensive Player of the Year after his season with Fribourg Olympic in the Swiss league.
At Richmond, Garrett helped the Spiders to two NCAA Tournament appearances and an Atlantic 10 Championship in 2011. He finished his career (2009-12) as UR’s all-time leader in career blocks with 231 rejections. His 107 blocks as a senior set the school’s single-season record, and his 14 blocks against UMass as a sophomore remains the school and Atlantic 10 single-game record.
Duinker moves to Europe from the Australian continent where he played for the Kings in the Australian League last year. He will be joining Lukoil Academic Sofia in the Bulgarian League. Over the summer, Duinker won the New Zealand NBL Newcomer of the Year after averaging 16.1 points per game for Fico Finance Nelson Giants in New Zealand. Duinker has also played in the Dutch league and Spanish league in his pro career.
An Australian native, Duinker graduated from UR in 2012 alongside Garrett, playing in the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and 2011. He grabbed 64 rebounds in his senior season and averaged 3.5 points per game.
