emu sportsFor the second night in a row the EMU soccer men went into overtime, but this time ended in a scoreless draw against Bethany College. After both teams fell in their season openers 2-1 on Friday, neither team could manage to score a goal and earn a win.

The contest was a hard fought battle where both teams were fighting for offensive positioning as their defenses were stifling any chances either team were attempting to create. The Royals had their first real scoring opportunity of the game in the 17th minute when Dominic Powers (Culpeper, Va./Fresta Valley Christian) sent a ball just above the crossbar.

Bethany attempted to create scoring chances, but most of them came up empty due to the well-played defense by the Royals as well as a total of 10 offsides calls go against the Bison. The Royals came up just short on opportunities created by headers from Jesus Trejo (Winchester, Va./John Handley) as well as continued shots by Powers.

As the game progressed into overtime, the Royals had their best opportunity come with 14.5 seconds left in the first overtime period on a free kick by Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) who drilled the ball right off of the cross bar.

The Royals had another free kick attempt in the closing seconds of the second overtime period, but came up empty again as time expired.

The EMU men will stay at home this week as they host Southern Virginia on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7:00pm. as they look for their first victory of the season.
