Drought assistance for county farmers, ranchers
Story by Chris Graham
Farmers and ranchers in Augusta County may be eligible for cost-share assistance for damage due to the 2007 drought.
The disaster program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Farm Service Agency.
Producers qualifying for assistance through the locally-administered Emergency Conservation Program may receive cost shares not to exceed 75 percent of the cost of installing eligible temporary measures – including installing pipelines or other facilities for livestock water or existing irrigation systems for orchards and vineyards, constructing and deepening wells for livestock water and developing springs or seeps for livestock water.
Cost-share assistance is limited to $200,000 per person per natural disaster.
To be eligible for cost shares, practices should not be started until a request has first been filed at the FSA County Office and an onsite inspection of the problem area has been made.
Signups for ECP end on Nov. 29.
For more information, contact the county FSA office at 540.248.6218.
