DMV contest winning license plate now available

dmv virginiaThe Virginia DMV newest special license plate is now available to the public. The “Eyes on the Road” license plate brings awareness to the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of keeping your eyes on the road.

“Taking your eyes off the road, talking with passengers, adjusting the radio, texting while driving – these are all distractions behind the wheel,” said Secretary of Transportation Shannon Valentine. “The new license plate is one more example of the Commonwealth’s commitment to improving safety, and reducing the number of injuries and fatalities on our roadways.”

The license plate design was created by Kaya Windpainter, a student at Blacksburg High School, as part of DMV’s Take Action Against Distraction License Plate Design Contest. Kaya’s design concept competed against seven other designs from students across the Commonwealth, winning an online public vote. She received a $1,000 prize courtesy of AAA.

“Throughout this contest, our goal was to start a conversation about distracted driving,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. “With nearly 200 contest entries and more than 17,000 votes, our expectations were exceeded. Seeing Kaya’s design on license plates will ensure the conversation continues.”

“Driving safely requires your full attention. Kaya’s license plate is a good reminder of that,” said Martha Meade, Manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “AAA was proud to partner with DMV for this effort to bring distracted driving issues to the forefront.”

The “Eyes on the Road” license plate can be purchased for a one-time $10 fee and can be ordered at dmvNOW.com or in DMV customer service centers.
