DMV closed Saturday, Aug. 4 for state computer mainframe move
All Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed on Saturday, August 4 to enable the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) to move the state’s mainframe services to a new supplier’s location.
While the mainframe is down, customers will also not be able to conduct transactions on dmvNOW.com. Web service will be restored as soon as VITA completes the move.
According to VITA, mainframes are computers known for their large size, amount of storage, processing power and high level of reliability. They are used primarily by large organizations, such as DMV and other state agencies, for mission-critical applications requiring high volumes of data processing.
The move is part of an overall change from one long-term supplier to multiple suppliers with shorter-term contracts. This new multi-sourcing environment will offer agility, market rates and the opportunity for enhancements to state computing systems.
