Home Team Designations
Since both teams were No. 3 regional seeds, coin flips were conducted Thursday to determine the home teams for the super regional. Virginia in the NCAA Baseball Championship
A No. 3 regional seed this season, Virginia is competing in its 15th NCAA tournament, including its 12th straight trip to the Big Dance. UVA is 45-32 in the tournament, including 33-16 over the last seven seasons.

Under Brian O’Connor (since 2004), UVA is 39-26 in the NCAA tourney. UVA owns six regional championships – all in the last seven seasons (2009-11, 2013-15) – and advanced to the College World Series in 2009, 2011 and 2014, taking runner-up honors to Vanderbilt in the 2014 CWS Finals.

UVA Reaches Super Regional for Sixth Time in Seven Years
Virginia and Florida State are the only schools to reach a super regional in six of the last seven seasons. UVA joins Louisville and Vanderbilt as the lone programs to play in each the last three super regionals.

UVA is hosting its fifth super regional in the last six years (played in 2009 NCAA Super Regional at Ole Miss). This marks the first time UVA has returned home to play a super regional after playing on the road for regionals. UVA is 7-7 all-time in super regional games, including 5-6 at home.

Virginia and Maryland Renew Acquaintances
Virginia owns a 111-80-1 lead in its all-time series with its former ACC rival Maryland. Prior to Maryland’s departure for the Big Ten, the 111 victories marked UVa’s most wins against any ACC opponent. UVA has posted a 29-5 record against Maryland under the current coaching staff (since 2004), including a 15-3 mark at Davenport Field. After falling in Game 1 last year, UVA took the final two games in the NCAA Super Regional to earn a berth in the College World Series.

Virginia One of Six Schools in Last 12 NCAA Tournaments
Virginia is one of six Division I baseball programs to reach the NCAA tournament each of the last 12 seasons (including 2015). The Cavaliers are one of three teams in the ACC to hold that distinction, joining Florida State and Miami. Top current NCAA tournament streaks: Miami (43), Florida State (38), Cal State Fullerton (24), Rice (21), Arkansas (13), Virginia (12).

Recapping the Cavaliers
Virginia comes into the NCAA Super Regional with a 37-22 record, including a 15-15 mark in ACC play. As a No. 3 regional seed, the Cavaliers swept three games at the NCAA Lake Elsinore Regional last week, with a win over San Diego State sandwiched between a pair of wins over Southern California. Freshmen Adam Haseley and Pavin Smith joined Kenny Towns and Brandon Waddell on the all-tournament team. Matt Thaiss leads the team in batting (.326), home runs (9) and RBI (59) this season.

Noting Maryland
The Terrapins own a 42-22 record and went 14-10 in their inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference. Also a No. 3 regional seed, Maryland won a pair of games last week at No. 1 national seed UCLA to earn the championship at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional. Kevin Martir and Brandon Lowe each are batting a team-leading .329. The Terrapins’ pitching staff is anchored by ace right-hander Mike Shawaryn, who owns a 13-2 record and 1.66 ERA this year. Closer Kevin Mooney has been lights out with a 3-0 record, 1.21 ERA and 11 saves.
