Derby race set for Saturday

The “Gravity Grand Prix” is scheduled for Saturday in Downtown Waynesboro with 61 soap box derby racers competing for the top trophies.

Opening ceremonies start at 8 a.m. with a parade of drivers, past derby winners, and local officials on hand. The events begin at 8 a.m. with a mandatory drivers meeting at the “bottom of the hill” on Main Street. All drivers and pit crew participants should plan on being there shortly before 8 a.m. Stock and Super Stock cars will be competing throughout the day with awards ceremonies at Kate Collins Middle School at 6 p.m.

Recent Heat and Lane drawings were held to set the order for the day’s racing. A tremendous number of boys and girls from the Blue Ridge Soap Classic franchise area of Augusta, Rockbridge, and Albemarle counties are set to blast down the hill for Saturday’s competition.

Additional activities for the day include special races, where lucky parents, who by raffle and auction won opportunities to drive a celebrity soapbox car, will be racing several times during the day. Both the mayors of Staunton and Waynesboro cities are on tap to race before the 9 a.m. childrens’ race start time. Also, this year we are putting on a media competition between Waynesboro’s own News Virginian and Staunton’s News Leader. This race will also run before 9 a.m. A special program listing all drivers will be included in the Friday, June 10 edition of the News Virginian. Fine foods will be available for purchase at various downtown restaurants. Burger King, Reo Distribution and WhiteWave sponsor this great event for our youngsters and community.
