What do Democrats want in 2020? They dunno

democrats 2020Democrats want somebody new, somebody young, to carry the torch for them for president in 2020. They also want Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

The conflicting message comes courtesy Public Policy Polling, which finds Biden, Sanders and Elizabeth Warren as the top three choices for Democrats looking at 2020 in a new national poll.

And yet … 57 percent of Democrats say they want their candidate to be under the age of 60, 77 percent want the candidate to be under 70, and 41 percent say they prefer someone who has never run for president before.

Biden, for the record, would be 77 in November 2020; Sanders would be 79; and Warren 71.

When you’re done scratching your head, it could be that the seemingly mutually exclusive pushes are the result of familiarity, in terms of the preferred candidates this far out, anyway.

Biden and Sanders both have name recognition in the vicinity of 90 percent, and favorables just south of 80 percent. Warren is known to 72 percent of Democrats, and a similarly strong favorable rating among those who know her.
