Liberty football coach Turner Gill has promoted Kyle DeArmon and shifted the coaching responsibilities for three other offensive coaches heading into the 2017 football season.
“These modification to our coaching staff responsibilities were made to give us the best chance to be more consistent in terms of offensive productivity,” said Gill. “I am thrilled with our staff’s continuity, developmental ability, recruiting efforts and the energy they bring to the program.”
DeArmon, Liberty’s offensive quality control staff member the last four seasons, has been promoted to Liberty’s new wide receivers coach.
Ron Brown, who helped Dante’ Shells became Liberty’s seventh player in program history with 2,000 career receiving yards (2,061), will now oversee the Flames’ running backs. Brown will continue to serve in his role as the program’s Associate Head Coach.
Scott Downing will work with Liberty’s tight ends and fullbacks, next season. He will also maintain his role as Liberty’s Special Teams Coordinator. The Flames finished the 2016 season ranked No. 15 in the country in kickoff returns (23.03 yards per return) and No. 38 in net punting (36.78 net yards per punt).
Aaron Stamn, who has served as Liberty’s tight ends and fullbacks coach for the last five seasons, will now coach the offensive line. Stamn served as Liberty’s Offensive Coordinator from 2012 to 2015, during which time 11 offensive linemen earned All-Big South honors. Stamn also served in the same role under Gill at Buffalo in 2009.
The Flames finished the 2016 season by capturing the program’s fourth Big South title in five seasons under Gill. Liberty finished the year with a 6-5 record and shared the conference title with Charleston Southern, as both teams posted a 4-1 league record. Overall, Liberty has claimed at least a share of the Big South title in eight of the last 10 seasons.
