Data collection begins for Downtown Mall Pedestrian Safety Project

Contributors

Downtown MallTechnology is in place to begin the Threat & Risk Assessment phase of the Charlottesville Downtown Mall Pedestrian Safety Project on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30. Devices to collect vehicle and pedestrian data are located on the Downtown Mall at both vehicular crossing sites at 4th Street SE/NE and 2nd Street SW/NW.

This data will be analyzed and used to create a “threat profile” to determine needs for the second phase of the project – Architectural & Engineering Design – which could include new bollards, hardscape barriers, extended curbing, walls and other methods to separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

TARA is the first phase of the 3-phase Downtown Mall Pedestrian Safety Project:

  • Phase 1: Threat & Risk Assessment (TARA)
  • Phase 2: Architectural & Engineering Design
  • Phase 3: Construction
