Dash smack down Red Sox, 12-1

salem red soxThe Winston-Salem Dash homered four times on their way to a 12-1 thumping of the Salem Red Sox on Sundayafternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Salem.

Adam Engel started the hit parade with a triple in the first inning and scored promptly on a Jake Peter sacrifice fly. Chris Jacobs launched the first Dash homer two batters later and the Dash led 3-0 after the first inning.

The Red Sox got their lone run in the second inning. Aneury Tavarez launched a one-out solo home run, his second of the year, and the Red Sox trailed 3-1.

The home run party continued in the home half of inning number two for the Dash. With two out and two on, Engel lofted a fly ball that barely carried over the left field wall for a three-run homer. Engel’s third homer of the year pushed the lead to 6-1 Winston-Salem. He finished a double shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with a triple, home run, three runs scored and three RBI.

In the fourth, the ball kept flying as the Dash crushed two more homers. With one out and one on, Ethan Wilson drove one out for a two-run shot, his first of the year. Three batters later, Trey Michalczewski jacked his second of the series, scoring three and pushing the lead to 11-1. Michalczewski was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Taylor Grover (1-1) took the loss in a spot-start for the Red Sox, lasting 3.1 innings and allowing ten runs (all earned) on six hits.

Winston-Salem squeezed out one more run in the eighth with three singles to lead off the inning against Mike Adams. Jacobs earned his third RBI of the day with the third of those singles, driving in Peter to make it 12-1. Jacob finished the game 2-for-5.

Mike Heidenreich (6-0) earned the win with seven strong innings for the Dash. He struck out six and allowed just four hits, the only run coming on the Tavarez homer.

Salem dropped to 20-18 with the loss and the Dash improved to 16-22. The Red Sox have the day off Monday and begin a three-game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats at LewisGale Field on Tuesday. Trey Ball (2-3, 6.03) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox against Lynchburg’s Michael Peoples (2-3, 8.00).
