salem red soxJordan Guerrero struck out seven and held the Salem Red Sox to just three hits while outdueling Ty Buttrey in a 1-0 win for the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark.

In the bottom of the first, Adam Engel led things off for the Dash with a single to right. He then stole second base and was advanced to third on a groundout from Jake Peter. Trey Michalczewski later yanked a two-out double down the right field line, allowing Engel to easily score from third for a 1-0 Dash lead.

That run was all that Guerrero would need, as the lefthander never allowed more than one baserunner to reach in an inning. He struck out seven through seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and one walk as he improved his record to 4-3.

Buttrey (7-6) was the hard luck loser for the Sox, as he worked 6.1 strong innings with only one run allowed on six hits to go with four strikeouts. The righthander had retired five in a row and 12 of 13 batters before giving up two singles in the seventh inning. Chandler Shepherd came in and coaxed a double play to escape damage in the seventh. He tossed 1.2 scoreless innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts.

Cole Sturgeon earned two of the three Salem base hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Deiner Lopez was the only other member of the Red Sox to record a base hit, as he went 1-for-3 with a single.

Jefferson Olacio earned his first save with a clean ninth for the Dash that featured two strikeouts.

Salem lost for the fifth time in its last six games and dropped to 54-59 and 16-27 in the second half. The first place Dash improved to 57-55 and 27-15. The Red Sox were shut out for the sixth time in their last 20 games.

The series concludes Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with Trey Ball (8-9, 3.85) starting for the Sox against Carson Fulmer (0-0, 5.14). Fans can listen to the game on 1240 AM ESPN Roanoke, online at salemsox.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.
