Attorney General-elect Mark Herring today announced Cynthia Hudson will serve as his Chief Deputy Attorney General.  In this new role Hudson will oversee the day-to-day legal operations of the Attorney General’s office and work with attorney general Herring to provide top-level professional legal services to the Commonwealth and all Virginians.

state-capitol2Cynthia Hudson has been with the City Attorney’s Office for the City of Hampton since 1996, serving the last eight years as the City Attorney.  Hudson currently serves as President of the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, and is on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Law Foundation.

Cynthia Hudson will be an outstanding new voice and talent in the Office of the Attorney General, and I know her extensive experience in dealing with all the issues that come before one of our largest cities will be a tremendous asset,” said Attorney General-elect Herring.  “This role is key to our success as we work to find new and better ways to serve all Virginians in a professional manner.”

“I am honored, humbled and excited about the opportunity to continue my public service in this broader capacity, and I very much appreciate the confidence Attorney General-elect Herring has placed in me,” said Hudson.  “By thinking anew about the role of the office, we can meet and exceed the public’s expectations.”

Prior to her service in Hampton, Hudson was in private practice for eight years.  She has a B.S. from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a law degree from William & Mary, where she also has served as an adjunct faculty member teaching state and local government law.  Hudson was honored as one of the “Influential Women of Virginia” in 2012 by Virginia Lawyers Weekly.

Attorney General-elect Herring will be sworn into office on January 11, 2014.
