The No. 11 UVA men’s cross country team finished third at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational Friday morning (Sept. 23) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.
The Cavaliers finished third in the 8,000-meter race with a total of 82 points, behind No. 12 BYU (39) and No. 1 Syracuse (44). Campbell was fourth with 125 points, while No. 4 Stanford was fifth with 139.
“Our team ran well on a hot and challenging day to run,” UVA men’s cross country coach Pete Watson said. “The boys did a very good job of maintaining composure and running strong for the most part. It was a good result and we ran well. BYU and Syracuse are just better teams then us right now, but we have two months to close the gap.”
Redshirt sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) crossed the line first for the Cavaliers, finishing 11th overall in 24:12.3. Seniors Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) and Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) placed 14th and 15th, respectively, while junior Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) and freshman Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) finished 20th and 22nd, respectively, to round out the scoring five.
Next up, the Cavaliers head to the Penn State National Open on Oct. 14 in State College, Pa.
No. 14 Cavalier Women Place Fourth at Panorama Farms
The No. 14 UVA women’s cross country team finished fourth at the Virginia/Panorama Farms InvitationalFriday morning (Sept. 23) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.
Virginia finished in fourth with a score of 127 points. No. 19 BYU won the 5,000-meter race with 47 points, while SMU was second (89) and No. 16 Syracuse was third (98).
“We appreciate everyone that came to compete here today, many from a great distance,” UVA women’s cross country coach Todd Morgan said. “Our group made the most of the day and competed hard. Now we know where we are and have our sights on where we need to be for the championship portion of the season.”
Sophomore Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) finished 15th overall in 17:40.4 to lead UVA across the line, while graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) was 18th in 17:45.6 in her Virginia debut. Graduate student Sarah Astin (Isle of Man, Great Britain was 24th, while junior Megan Rebholz (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the scoring five, placing 32nd and 38th, respectively.
Next up, the Cavaliers compete in the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 15 in Terre Haute, Ind.
