Commonwealth Transportation Board announces schedule of public meetings

Contributors

The Commonwealth Transportation Board will hold nine public meetings across the commonwealth from October through December on prioritizing transportation projects.

The public is invited to get the latest information, ask questions and provide input on transportation projects. This year’s meetings will consist of an open house where attendees can review and provide feedback on the list of proposed local and regional projects that have been submitted for scoring through the SMART SCALE prioritization process.

Following the open house, a town hall session will engage public and transportation stakeholders in discussion and provide an opportunity to ask questions about the projects. There will be no formal public comment during the meetings.

Signed into law by Gov. Terry McAuliffe, SMART SCALE (formerly known as House Bill 2) is an objective and data-driven “prioritization” process to score projects according to critical transportation needs.

The meetings will highlight the 436 applications for projects submitted by 148 local and regional governments across the state. The applications request $9.25 billion in funding through SMART SCALE with a total value of $12.09 billion in total project value.

Projects that have been determined to meet a need identified in VTrans, Virginia’s statewide transportation policy plan, will be advanced for evaluation and scoring.  Scoring results will be made available to the public.  Following public meetings in the spring, the CTB will use public feedback and the scoring data to select which projects to fund and be included in the next Six-Year Improvement Program by June of 2017.
