Chris Graham: Tom O’Brien to UVa.?

A source told me Wednesday night that Virginia is actively pursuing former N.C. State football coach Tom O’Brien for a position on Mike London’s staff at UVa.

The story, as it was reported to me, is that UVa. has reached out to O’Brien, a former assistant at Virginia under George Welsh, to serve as associate head coach under London, who served under O’Brien when he was the head coach at Boston College.

It’s not entirely clear that O’Brien, fired by N.C. State after going 7-5 in 2012 and posting a 40-35 record in Raleigh in six seasons, would be interested in the job.

The interest in O’Brien from UVa.’s perspective would be obvious. A knock on London is his lack of experience as a head coach in I-A. O’Brien has been a head man for 16 years all told, with an overall record of 115-80, including a stellar 8-2 record in bowl games.

London fired the most experienced coach on his staff, defensive coordinator Jim Reid, who was among four coaches let go last week in a housecleaning that had been expected after Virginia posted its second 4-8 season in London’s three years in Charlottesville.
