newspaperThe Charlottesville-UVA-Albemarle County Emergency Communications Center announced Monday the appointment of Tom Berry as interim director, following the resignation of Barry Neulen earlier in the day.

“I look forward to serving our regional emergency communications center and to continue delivering professional and quality services to our community during this time of transition,” said Berry.

The announcement was made at the ECC Management Board meeting Monday afternoon. ECC Management Board Chair Doug Walker named a Director Search Committee comprising Albemarle County Chief of Police Ron Lantz, City of Charlottesville Fire Chief Andrew Baxter, and University of Virginia Associate Vice President for Safety and Security Gloria Graham.

Graham will serve as Chair for this committee.

Since December 2018, Berry has been, and will continue to be, the Executive Director of Emergency Management for the University of Virginia. Tom served as the Emergency Management Director of the UVA Health System for 11 years, beginning in 2007.

Berry is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) with more than 30 years of emergency operations experience. Since 2007, he has worked directly with the ECC and local/regional public safety agencies to prepare for and manage countless emergencies, including the tragedies of Aug. 12, 2017.
