Charlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones announced the appointment of Charlene Green as the next manager of the Office of Human Rights.
Ms. Green began working for the City of Charlottesville in June 2010 as Program Coordinator for the Dialogue on Race. In 2014, she was hired as Community Outreach Specialist for the Office of Human Rights.
She has over 25 years of experience in education working as a teacher in elementary and secondary schools and as an assistant professor at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. She has been a trainer and consultant in Multicultural Education for the past 20 years, working on diversity and cultural competency with numerous schools in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania as well as with organizations such as the FBI, the US Department of Education, and the Department of Public Instruction in North Carolina.
Ms. Green counts her time with the City as some of the most important work of her career especially in the area of social and equity justice. “I feel very fortunate to live in a community that has established an office dedicated to addressing issues related to human and civil rights, ” said Green. “I’ve lived in Charlottesville for 25 years, and after getting to know so many of the people who have been born and raised here, and understanding the history of this area, it’s critically important for the people of Charlottesville to know that there is a Human Rights Commission and an Office of Human Rights that will do its best to work toward social justice for everyone.”
“Charlene has been a strong advocate for civil rights and inclusion in our City for two decades,” said Mr. Jones. “She understands the struggles of many in our community and has the ability to bring people together from a variety of backgrounds to make Charlottesville a better place to live for all of our residents. I’m confident she will do an excellent job of leading this office and providing support and guidance to the Human Rights Commission.”
Ms. Green will assume the role of Manager on November 7th. The search for a new Community Outreach Specialist will begin before the end of the year.
