Charlottesville: McIntire Park access information

mcintire parkWith the ground breaking of the new YMCA in McIntire Park on Thursday, the Charlottesville Department of Parks and Recreation released information regarding changes to circulation and access to the park.

  • Beginning November 6, 2015, or shortly thereafter, direct access to McIntire Park from the westbound U.S. 250 bypass will be closed to public traffic.  This access point will be limited to construction traffic in an effort to limit construction vehicle access to the construction site, and off Rugby Avenue or circulating through the Rugby Avenue/250 Bypass on and off ramps. Please see the image below for reference.
  • The walking path from Charlottesville High School will be rerouted to allow for construction and maintain access to the park from CHS.  Because of the need remove the existing electrical service and to reconfigure and install a new service and lights. the trail will be unlit for a period of time, possibly up to 60 days.
  • In order to ensure continued access to the balance of the park a new permanent drive will be installed at the end of the existing softball field parking and connect to the entrance road.  The existing access road will be blocked just beyond that point so all access to the park will be via this new drive.  Please see the image below for reference.
  • This construction will eliminate picnic shelters 1 and 3 which will be replaced by similar facilities on East McIntire Park as development takes place there.
  • The construction will have no impact on access to any of the remaining park facilities: little league or softball fields, playground area, restrooms, picnic shelter 2 or any parking areas.
