Caleb Powell gem pushes Waynesboro past New Market, 4-1

generals-rebels2Waynesboro got a solid effort from starting pitcher Caleb Powell to lift the Generals to a 4-1 win over New Market on Sunday night at Kate Collins Field.

Powell (3-1) went eight innings, giving up one run on four hits, striking out six and walking one on 91 pitches, 66 strikes.

The Rebels got their only run of the night in the first on a two-out homer by Darian Carpenter, his fourth long ball of the season. Waynesboro (18-13) responded with two runs in its half of the first, on an RBI singles by Travis Naraine and Eugene Vasquez.

The Generals added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Kyle Pitts and another in the fifth on a homer by Michael McClellan, his fourth of the season.

Joe Marotta earned his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The win moves Waynesboro to within three and a half games of first-place Front Royal, and a game behind second-place Harrisonburg.

The Generals return to action on Monday on the road at Harrisonburg.
