Bubble man rescued on run to Bahamas

bubble manDidn’t know you could run to the Bahamas, did you? Well, turns out you can’t, despite the best of intentions, as peace activist and endurance runner Reza Baluchi discovered this week.

Baluchi, on a mission to run through 194 recognized countries to promote world peace (seriously), was on a trek from Miami to the Bahamas in an inflatable “Hydro Pod” when, surprisingly, things went awry.

While making the 90-mile run in the giant bubble across the Atlantic Ocean, Baluchi became disoriented, at one point reaching out via his satellite phone to ask for directions, which had to be awkward in and of itself, then ultimately having to make the call to ask to be rescued.

The Coast Guard obliged him, acknowledging in a press release that he was undone by (go figure) the Gulf Stream.

“The chances of muscling out of the Gulf Stream were pretty low,” said Coast Guard spokesman Mark Barney.

So there it stands. Gulf Stream 1, World Peace 0.
