Bridgewater College to host 12th annual Lincoln Symposium

bridgewater collegeThe 12th Annual Lincoln Society of Virginia Symposium will be held Monday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kline Campus Center at Bridgewater College. The event is free and open to the public.

Jared Peatman, director of curriculum for the Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg, is the keynote speaker and will address “Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address: Communicating a National Vision.”

Peatman is a 2002 graduate of Gettysburg College who also holds a master’s degree from Virginia Tech and Ph.D. from Texas A&M. Since 2009, he has created dozens of presentations and delivered hundreds of sessions that draw leadership lessons from historic sites including Gettysburg, the Alamo, Jamestown, and Waterloo.

Peatman’s first book is The Long Shadow of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. For that project he was named the 2009 Organization of American Historians/Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission Doctoral Fellow. In 2012 received the Hay-Nicolay Dissertation Prize for the best work on Abraham Lincoln or the Civil War. He is also the author, with Steven B. Wiley, ofA Transformational Journey: Leadership Lessons from Gettysburg.

The Lincoln Society of Virginia was founded in 2004 by Phillip C. Stone, Bridgewater College president emeritus, to commemorate and disseminate information about Lincoln family connections in the Shenandoah Valley, to protect and preserve Lincoln landmarks in the Shenandoah Valley and to interpret the 16th president, his life, work and legacy, particularly in Virginia.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
