Bridgewater College is recognizing academic achievement during a week of activities dedicated to showcasing excellence. ASPIRE (A Celebration of the Arts, Scholarship, Performance, Innovation and Research Excellence), will be held Sunday, April 26 – Friday, May 1.
ASPIRE opens with a concert by the Bridgewater College Symphonic Band at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in Cole Hall. “Transcriptions for Wind Band,” under the direction of Dr. Christine Carrillo, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental music, will feature pieces originally written for instruments other than wind band. Two student conductors will be featured: Miranda L. Fitzgerald, a senior music major, from Verona, Va., and Jordan Haugh, a junior music major, from Frederick, Md. The concert will conclude with the premiere of the band arrangement of “Bridgewater Fair” by Ephraim T. Hildebrand, arranged by Dr. Larry Taylor, associate professor of music.
Research convocations sponsored by Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 30, in Cole Hall.
Three Bridgewater College students, including junior history majors Sean Bright, a from Needmore, Pa., Charlotte McIntyre from Street, Md., and Amy Reagan, a senior history and political science major from Chesterfield, Va., will give oral presentations on April 28.
Giving oral presentations on April 30 are: Whitney Jenkins, a senior health and exercise science major from Purcellville, Va., and Katelyn D. Senger, a junior psychology and sociology double major from Bridgewater, Va.
The department of world languages and cultures will present panels at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 30, in the Spoerlein Lecture Hall in the McKinney Center for Science and Mathematics.
A cultural studies panel will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, a Bridgewater College Student Scholarship Showcase will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, and a communication studies senior poster session will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30. All of these events will be in the Boitnott Room in Rebecca Hall at Bridgewater College.
A Bridgewater College Faculty Scholarship Showcase will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Boitnott Room.
ASPIRE concludes with a concert by the Bridgewater College Concert Choir and Chorale at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music. “The Winter is Past: Songs of Departure and Return,” under the direction of Dr. John McCarty, assistant professor of music and director of choral music, and accompanied by Lacey Johnson, an adjunct instructor of music, will feature pieces with texts and musical forms related to departure and return. Fitzgerald will conduct John Dowland’s “Now, O Now, I Needs Must Part.” The concert will also feature several student vocal and instrumental soloists.
All ASPIRE events are free and open to the public.
Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college, located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
