i81-headerDrivers on Interstate 81 may experience traffic delays beginning Tuesday, December 1, during bridge repairs in Rockingham County and a sinkhole repair in Rockbridge County.

Overnight right-lane closures are scheduled for southbound I-81 near mile marker 261 in Rockingham County, on weeknights from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning December 1. The overnight closures will allow contractors to repair the Route 793 bridge over the interstate, which was recently struck and damaged by a dump truck. These repairs and resulting lane closures are expected to last about two weeks. During that time, traffic on Route 793 (Concord Church Road) will be restricted to single lane, and drivers will follow a stop-and-proceed traffic pattern.

A shoulder closure is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on December 1 on northbound I-81 between mile markers 196 and 197.5 in Rockbridge County. This shoulder closure will remain in place while crews repair a sinkhole in the median. The work is expected to finish Wednesday afternoon, December 2.

All work is weather permitting.
