Blue Ridge Parkway announces short-term road closure

Contributors

blue ridge parkwayBlue Ridge Parkway personnel will be conducting road maintenance from Monday, March 28 through April 1. The work zone will be closed from Milepost 45.6 at US Route 60 by Buena Vista to Milepost 60.5 near Otter Creek Campground.

During the five-day period, both lanes in this section of the Parkway will be closed to all activity (cars, bicycles, and hikers) to ensure the safety of Parkway visitors and staff. This work requires equipment and maintenance staff to remain in the travel lanes during these activities.

The closure will go into effect at approximately 7:45 a.m. on March 28, 2016 and remain closed for the entire period, re-opening by 5:00 p.m. on April 1, 2016. Parkway visitors should plan alternate routes around this area.

During the closure, park staff will be using heavy equipment and dump trucks to remove fallen rock and slide material from the road and shoulders. Winter storms created numerous debris, downed trees, and rock slides in this area. In order to provide for the safety and enjoyment of the visiting public, this work is necessary prior to the upcoming visitor season.
