Big sixth inning lifts Lynchburg Hillcats

lynchburg hillcatsThe Lynchburg Hillcats scored five unanswered runs to come from behind for the second straight night, beating the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 5-1, on Wednesday.

The Hillcats (5-2, 34-40) have now won five of seven games to open up the second half after downing the Blue Rocks (3-3, 34-42).

Tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, Lynchburg plated four runs to take control of the game. Ernie Clement led off the inning with a single, and Mitch Longo hit an RBI triple to put the Hillcats ahead, 2-1. Conner Capel hit a sacrifice fly to score Longo to add to the lead. Later in the inning, Li-Jen Chu doubled and Jodd Carter blasted a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, to cap the night’s scoring.

Wilmington plated the first run of the game in the first inning. Blake Perkins reached on an infield single and eventually scored on a Travis Jones RBI single to give the ‘Rocks a 1-0 lead.

Lynchburg tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Capel belted a solo home run, his fifth of the year, over the center field fence to even the score.

When hitting multiple home runs in a game, the Hillcats are now 6-0.

Hillcats starter Eli Morgan (Win, 3-2), fired six innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits. Micah Miniard pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and James Karinchak (Save, 7) picked up the final two outs in the ninth to nail down the win.

Ofreidy Gomez (Loss, 2-6) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in six innings.

The series continues on Thursday with the fourth game of the five-game series. Right-hander Zach Plesac (4-3, 5.01) will start for the Hillcats against Wilmington right-hander Gerson Garabito (2-6, 4.32). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Frawley Stadium.
