Baysox shut out Richmond, 2-0

Three Bowie hurlers including right-handed starter Zach Clark combined on a three-hit shutout as the Baysox (10-15) downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels (12-13), 2-0, at The Diamond on Tuesday night.  The shutout loss marked the fourth time on the season that Richmond had been blanked.

Squirrels’ left-hander Mike Kickham struggled with his command from the outset, but the Baysox weren’t able to take advantage until the third inning.  A one-out single from LJ Hoes got Bowie started.  Brandon Waring followed and worked the count full before driving a 3-2 offering from Kickham into the alley in right-center field.  Waring rolled all the way to third as Hoes scored on the RBI triple.  Caleb Joseph made it 2-0 a batter later with an infield-single.

After allowing two men to reach with one out in the fourth inning, Kickham (1-2) was lifted to the loss.  He used 81 pitches over 3 1/3 innings, registering his shortest outing of the season.  The lefty was charged with two earned runs on four hits, walked a season-high five and struck out four.

Meanwhile, Clark (2-1) was cruising.  He earned his second win of the season over seven scoreless innings.  He allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out three.  Right-handers Pat Egan and Greg Burke took it the rest of the way, as Egan handled the eighth and Burke the ninth.  Burke earned his third save of the season.

The Squirrels bullpen was the lone bright spot for Richmond, as three hurlers combined on 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.  Right-hander Andy Reichard worked 3 2/3 innings, while lefty Chris Gloor and righty Austin Fleet each handled one.

The Squirrels continue their four-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) at The Diamond on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM. Richmond RHP Justin Fitzgerald (1-1, 3.76) will oppose Bowie RHP Tim Bascom (2-1, 3.75). Tickets are available and can be purchased at
