henry cole 2Henry Cole, an award-winning children’s author and illustrator, will speak to elementary-aged children with artistic and/or literary ambitions on Thursday, March 20th, at 4:00 pm at the Staunton Public Library.

Cole will lead an entertaining and interactive hour-long discussion of what it takes to write and illustrate books for children, using an easel and pen to produce hilarious drawings on the spot. While encouraging children to develop their individual talents, Cole also emphasizes the role that patience and perseverance have played in his particular career. This special presentation, free and open to the public, is best suited for children in grades 2-6 and their parents. The program will be interpreted for the deaf.

A Virginia native and former elementary school science teacher, Cole is the author of such critically-acclaimed books as Unspoken: A Story of the Underground Railroad (Horace Mann Upstanders Book Award; 2013 Jefferson Cup Youth award-winner), Jack’s Garden, and A Nest for Celeste, all of which he also illustrated. Additionally, his illustrations can be found in over 80 books, including And Tango Makes Three (Gustavus Myers Award winner), Dame Julie Andrews Edwards’ Little Bo series, Margie Palatini’s Bad Boys series, and over 20 collaborations with former teaching colleague Pamela Duncan Edwards. Over the past decade, Cole has traveled the country’s schools and libraries speaking to elementary-age children about writing and illustrating books, both captivating and educating listeners.
