Augusta Health announced that it has been named a recipient of Healthgrades 2014 America’s 100 BestTM Hospital Award.  This is the third consecutive year that Augusta Health has been recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals

“Every person working at Augusta Health plays a key role in delivering this excellent standard of care—the physicians, nurses, technicians, care partners—and the hundreds of key Augusta Health employees in the background of patient care who support the direct care team in everything they do.  That’s the teamwork,” said Mary N. Mannix, FACHE, President and CEO of Augusta Health. “As their colleague, I am incredibly proud to work with them every day.  As a member of the community, I am reassured to know they are the ones here—providing care that is among the best in the nation—to me and my family every day.”

In addition to a comprehensive cancer program affiliated with Duke Medicine at the Augusta Health Cancer Center, and a Heart and Vascular Center on the Augusta Health campus, Augusta Health’s services include laboratories, urgent care and convenient care clinics, imaging centers and physicians’ offices that stretch across the Shenandoah Valley.  Hospice of the Shenandoah, Care Home Medical, and Augusta Health Home Health also serve patients outside the hospital’s four walls.  Most recently, Augusta Health added a Patient Centered Medical Home, where a team of healthcare providers work with patients with multiple chronic diseases.

According to Healthgrades, to be recognized as one of America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals, hospitals must have had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates that were in the top 2% in the nation for a minimum of four years. From 2010 to 2012, Healthgrades America’s 100 BestTM hospitals, as a group, had an overall 24.53% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals in the nation. From 2010 to 2012, if all other hospitals had performed at the level of Healthgrades America’s 100 BestTM hospitals, 160,701 lives could have potentially been saved nationwide.

“This distinction provides consumers in the Shenandoah Valley with a measure of confidence that Augusta Health has delivered better than expected outcomes across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures and over an extended period of time,” said Evan Marks, EVP Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. “Augusta Health, like other the other Healthgrades America’s 100 BestTM hospitals, has exhibited exceptional performance, reflecting a long-standing approach to quality care.”

Healthgrades America’s 100 BestTM Hospitals Award recognizes hospitals for consistent clinical excellence by identifying those that received a Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for the most consecutive years. To be eligible for the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, a hospital had to have been evaluated for its performance in at least 21 of the 30 Healthgrades procedures and conditions, based on Medicare inpatient data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) database.
