An Augusta County sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries in an accident while in pursuit of a street racer on Sunday.
The deputy, Morgan T. Crawford, 29, of Staunton, Va., was transported to Augusta Health for treatment of minor injuries in the accident, reported at 6:35 p.m. on Shalom Road in Augusta County.
According to information from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, Crawford had observed two vehicles setting up to drag race at the intersection of Route 340 and Mount Vernon Road. The deputy observed and heard the vehicle spinning tires and smoking the tires at the light. The vehicles did start racing each other as the deputy pulled in behind them.
The Mustang involved was stopped by Crawford and instructed stay put while the deputy stopped the other vehicle. The second vehicle involved was a Lincoln, which the deputy also stopped. Once the deputy was able to get the Lincoln stopped the Mustang took off.
Crawford pursued the Mustang on Route 340 onto Shalom Road. The deputy lost control of his cruiser in the 300 block of Shalom Road. The Mustang wrecked near the intersection of Shalom Road and J and B Lane when the vehicle struck a guardrail.
The Virginia State Police responded and investigated the crash involving Crawford.
The investigation into the street-racing incident is still ongoing and charges are pending.
