Adam Jewell dominant, but The Citadel defeats VMI, 1-0

vmi baseballFreshman right-hander Adam Jewell threw a complete-game three-hitter, but The Citadel defeated the VMI baseball team 1-0 in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Ryan McCarthy singled to third base in the bottom of the first to plate Jeffery Brown and The Citadel took a 1-0 lead. Neither Jewell nor Bulldog lefty Shane Connolly would allow another run over the next eight innings.

Jewell needed just 98 pitches for his complete game, allowing just three hits, three walks and one earned run with five strikeouts. Connolly allowed four hits and one walk to earn the complete game shutout.

Don Goodes went 2-3 with a walk for VMI (5-17/1-1 SoCon). Noah Cook and Ryan Hatten had the Keydets’ other hits.

The Citadel improves to 8-15 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The series will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m.
