A slow start plagued the No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as it dropped a 12-6 contest at No. 19 Boston College. The win marks the first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season for the Eagles (6-5, 1-3 ACC) and the first-ever over Virginia. The Cavaliers fall to 6-5 this season and 0-4 in the league.

Virginia was led by junior Charlie Finnigan’s three goals – the 14th hat trick of her career. Sophomore Caroline McTiernan tacked on two scores for Virginia, while junior Josie Owen had the remaining goal. Junior Julie Gardner, sophomore Annie Thomas and Owen were credited for one assist.

Boston College was led by Brooke Blue’s three goals, while Sam Taylor, Kristin Igoe, Hannah Alley and Moira Barry each had two scores. Brittany Wilton tacked on one.

Virginia gave up the first goal of the game, at 27:07, but quickly recovered as Finnigan converted a free position shot one minute later. The remainder of the half would be all Boston College though, as the Eagles rattled off five-straight goals to take a 6-1 lead into the intermission.

Boston College won six of the eight draw controls in the half and outshot the Cavaliers, 14-5.

The second half looked to be a bit better for Virginia, as Finnigan got the scoring started at 22:54, but Boston College answered with six-unanswered goals for a 12-2 advantage by the 9:17 mark.

Owen halted the Eagles’ streak at 2:12, before McTiernan fired back-to-back goals into the net within 16 seconds of each other to bring the score to 12-5 with 35 seconds to play. Finnigan capped off the scoring in the game with a goal eight seconds later.

Senior All-American Liz Downs anchored Virginia’s defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while junior Bailey Fogarty had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Senior Marghi Walters won a team-high two draw controls.

In goal, sophomore Kim Kolarik picked up six saves and four ground balls.
