#7 UVa. women's lax defeats ODU

The No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team defeated Old Dominion Wednesday evening, 9-5, to earn its third victory over an in-state opponent this year. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 6-4 this season, while the Monarchs fall to 1-6.

Freshman Dana Boyle led Virginia’s attack with a personal-best three goals, her first career hat trick, while junior Julie Gardner had a game-high four points on one goal and three assists. Sophomore Carolina McTiernan and junior Josie Owen each contributed three goals for the Cavaliers, while sophomore Annie Thomas had one score. McTiernan also recorded one assist.

For Old Dominion, Rebecca Hatrum recorded two goals, while Lisa Bernardini, Alyssa Dragon and Tracy Reed each had one score.

Boyle got the scoring started at 28:38, before Old Dominion evened the score at one at the 27:37 mark. The Cavaliers then rattled off a three-goal spurt, sparked by a goal from Thomas, assisted by Gardner, at 26:19. Owen then extended her scoring streak to 14-straight games with a goal from McTiernan at 25:07. McTiernan then notched a score of her own at 23:11 to push Virginia ahead, 4-1.

The Monarch’s halted UVa’s streak with a goal at 17:06, before back-to-back scores from Owen and McTiernan gave Virginia a 6-2 halftime lead.

Old Dominion scored the first goal out of the intermission at 26:40, but Boyle tallied her second score at 25:24. Another goal from the Monarchs cut Virginia’s lead back to three, 7-4, at 23:38, before Gardner got on the board at 14:07.

After almost nine minutes of scoreless action, Boyle notched her first career hat trick, with a goal at 5:25 and ODU closed out the scoring in the game with a goal at 4:58, bringing the final score to 9-5.

Defensively, the Cavaliers were led by sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kolarik’s seven saves, while junior Bailey Fogarty caused a team-high four turnovers. Freshman Maddy Keeshan scooped up three groundballs.
