#7 UVA strangles Iowa, 74-41

uva basketballSeventh-ranked UVA held Iowa under half its season average in an easy 74-41 win on Friday in the Emerald Coast Classic.

The Cavs (5-0) went on an early 11-0 run to seize control, and led 39-19 at the half, shooting 51.6 percent from the field, and holding the Hawkeyes, who had averaged 93.8 points per game coming in, to 29.2 percent and forcing 10 first-half Iowa turnovers.

It would not get closer than 18 in the second half, and Virginia, which had held its last three opponents under 40 points, surrendered just eight points in the final 13:20.

Jared Reuter scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting and had nine rebounds off the bench to lead the ‘Hoos. London Perrantes had 12 points (5-of-9 from the field) and had four assists for Virginia, which got 11 points from Isaiah Wilkins and 10 points and four assists from Darius Thompson.

UVA shot 48.3 percent for the game (29-of-60) and was 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from three-point range.

Peter Jok led Iowa (3-2) with 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The Hawkeyes finished at 30.6 percent from the field (15-of-49) and shot 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from three-point range.

The Virginia defense forced 18 Iowa turnovers, and UVA had 18 assists on its 29 made buckets with just five turnovers.

UVA advances to the championship game of the Classic tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against the winner of Memphis-Providence.
