Things to Know
• Eleven of UVA’s next 17 games are on the road.
• UVA leads the ACC and ranks seventh nationally in hits (345).
• Ernie Clement ranks second nationally with 12 sac bunts.
• Virginia has started at least three freshmen in all but three games this year.
• UVA had seven alums on MLB Opening Day rosters.
Virginia is 18-3 all-time against Boston College. All of the meetings have come since the Eagles entered the ACC for the 2005-06 season. The programs played only one series in the last four years – a UVA sweep in Charlottesville in 2014.
This is UVA’s first trip to Chestnut Hill since April 29-May 1, 2011, when the Cavaliers took two of three games against BC. UVA is 6-2 all-time in Chestnut Hill.
Limited Experience vs. BC
Only five current Cavaliers have played against Boston College, including the injured Robbie Coman. Daniel Pinero started all three games at shortstop in the 2014 series and went 4-for-12 with a pair of RBI. Connor Jones worked 4 2/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen in UVA’s 3-2, 12-inning win in Game 1 of the Saturday doubleheader. Matt Thaiss (0-1) and Alec Bettinger (1/3 IP) also have dabbled against BC.
Thaiss Riding Hot Streak
Matt Thaiss currently owns a career-long 10-game hit streak and is batting .436 with a .511 on-base percentage in that stretch. He has 17 hits in the last 10 games, with 11 coming against left-handed pitchers. Thaiss struck out one time in 44 plate appearances in that time.
Noting Boston College
Boston College is 14-10, including a 3-7 mark in ACC. Poor weather has plagued the Eagles of late, as they lost their final two games of the Florida State series and their midweek game to weather and have not played since last Friday. BC has played just two home games thus far. Joe Cronin leads the team with a .356 batting average and 22 RBI. BC’s pitching staff has been strong with a 3.34 ERA (fourth in the ACC), while limiting opponents to a .216 batting average.
Virginia comes home next Tuesday (April 12) to play Longwood before entertaining North Carolina next weekend (April 15-17).
