#20 UVa. basketball hosts Maryland Monday night

#20 UVa. (19-5, 10-1 ACC) hosts Maryland (14-10, 6-5 ACC) in ACC action on Monday, Feb. 10. Tipoff at John Paul Jones Arena (14,593) is set for 9 p.m.

Tickets for the Virginia-Maryland game may be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com/tickets. Fans may also purchase tickets through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office by telephone and in person. The ticket office is located in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Telephone purchases can be made by calling 1-800-542-8821. Tickets may also be purchased on game day at the JPJ box office starting at 7:30 p.m.

Last Time vs. the Terrapins
• Mike Tobey’s tip-in with 1:46 to play in overtime gave Virginia the lead and it held on to beat Maryland 61-58 on March 10, 2013.
• Akil Mitchell led Virginia with 17 points and Joe Harris had 15 and Tobey 13.
• Nick Faust led the Terrapins with 15 points and Dez Wells finished with 12 and 12 rebounds.
• Faust scored 10 of his 13 points during a 19-2 run early in the game and Maryland almost made it last, not letting Virginia get back to even until Harris’ 3-pointer with just 1:37 remaining.
• Wells’ floater gave Maryland the lead back with 23.8 seconds left, and Tobey tied it with a layup with 5.4 seconds left in regulation.
• Justin Anderson blocked Maryland’s final shot in regulation, and the teams traded baskets in overtime until Tobey’s follow finished it.

Virginia in the Polls
• Virginia is ranked a season-high No. 20 in the latest AP poll, marking its highest rankings since a No. 19 ranking on Feb. 6, 2012.
• No. 20/21 UVa is ranked for the first time since being ranked No. 25 in both polls on Nov. 11.
• Virginia’s No. 24 preseason AP ranking marked its first since being ranked No. 11 to start the 2001-02 season.
• The Cavaliers, who were ranked for the first two weeks, returned to the rankings this season for the first time since Feb. 27, 2012.

Last Time Out
• Malcolm Brogdon had 14 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double as Virginia beat Georgia Tech 64-45 Saturday.
• The Cavaliers trailed 30-29 at the half, but held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for the final 9:51 while outscoring Georgia Tech 22-1.
• Georgia Tech’s final lead came with 9:52 remaining, when Kammeon Holsey completed a three-point play to push its lead to 44-42.
• Joe Harris and Anthony Gill each added 13 points, while Chris Bolden led Georgia Tech with 13 points.
• The Cavaliers owned a 46-25 rebounding advantage.

About the Cavaliers
Virginia has won 10 of its last 11 games and looks to win its eighth straight overall. The Cavaliers have defeated Florida State (78-66), North Carolina (76-61), Virginia Tech (65-45), Notre Dame (68-53), Pittsburgh (48-45), Boston College (77-67) and Georgia Tech (64-45) since their 69-65 loss at Duke on Jan. 13. A Virginia win against Georgia Tech would match its 11-1 ACC start in the 1981-82 season.

The Cavaliers’ success has been highlighted by their top-ranked defense, rebounding and balanced scoring. The Cavaliers are yielding 55.6 points per game and grabbing 55.1 percent of the rebounds, ruling the glass in 19 of 24 games. UVa also ranks 10th in the nation in field goal percentage defense at 38.1 percent.

Virginia is averaging 66.5 points per game, marking its highest total under head coach Tony Bennett. Virginia is averaging 24.3 bench points and has scored 43.6 percent of its points in the paint.

UVa sports a balanced scoring attack, led by Malcolm Brogdon and All-ACC performer Joe Harris. Brogdon leads the team at 12.1 points per game, while Harris is second at 11.3 ppg. Brogdon has recorded back-to-back double-doubles and has a career-best 11-game double figures scoring streak. He ranks second in the ACC in free throw percentage (90.0%), fifth in steals (1.73 spg), fifth in field goal percentage (47.2%) and 11th in scoring (15.3 ppg) during league play.

Versatile guard Justin Anderson, who had 13 points against Boston College, has recorded 9.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Anthony Gill, who has reached double figures in each of the last two games, has registered 7.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Mike Tobey has chipped in 7.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Akil Mitchell has added 6.8 points and a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game. Mitchell is tied for third in the ACC at 8.3 rebounds per game during league play. Freshman point guard London Perrantes ranks first in ACC action in assist to turnover ratio (5.1) and fifth in assists (4.2 apg).
