#17 UVa. holds off Maryland, 61-53

photo (2)#17 UVa. never could shake off a game Maryland squad, but the Cavs were able to do just enough to pull out a 61-53 win Monday night in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (20-5, 11-1 ACC) trailed 26-25 at the half, but took the lead for good with a 7-0 run early in the second half that broke a 35-35 tie.

It was 52-41 Virginia with 3:45 to go when Maryland scratched back into it with a 9-2 run that cut the lead to four at 54-50 on a Nick Faust dunk with 2:11 to go.

Virginia would go 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:03 to seal the deal.

Maryland (14-11, 6-6 ACC) got 15 points from Seth Allen and 12 points from Dez Wells. The Terps shot 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) from the field for the game, and 10-of-26 from the field (38.5 percent) in the second half.

After starting the game 4-for-10 from three-point range, the Terps made only two of its last 11 shots from long-range.

Virginia shot 47.1 percent from the field (24-for-51) and was 4-of-13 from three-point range (30.8 percent).

Joe Harris led the ‘Hoos with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range.

Malcolm Brogdon had 13 points each for Virginia, which travels Saturday to Clemson.
