An Augusta County house fire claimed the life of a young boy Sunday morning. The cause and origin remain under investigation, which is being conducted by Virginia State Police Special Agent B.N. Webster of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office.

The fire occurred at approximately 8 a.m. at a house in the 600 block of Dooms Crossing Road in Dooms. The fire spread rapidly throughout the house, which is completely destroyed. The parents and a 5-year-old son were able to escape without injury.

A second son, Dustyn R. Fitzgerald, 11, was found upstairs in his bedroom. He died at the scene. The boy’s remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.
