Bridgewater College pushed nationally-ranked Centre College to the limit Sunday afternoon, but the fifth-ranked Colonels emerged with a 1-0 victory on the second day of the Washington and Lee Classic.
The loss was the first of the season for the Eagles as they drop to 4-1. Centre, a Final Four team a year ago, is now 6-0 on the season.
Bridgewater held a 12-3 advantage in total shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. The Eagles put seven shots on goal, but Centre keeper Olivia Alford was up to the task with seven saves.
The Eagles put plenty of pressure on the Colonels defense down the stretch with four corner kicks and four shots in the final 10 minutes of play.
Bridgewater’s final chance came with just more than a minute remaining when Bailey Kratz took a corner.Isabella Weigel was able to put a shot on goal, but Alford was there for the save, preserving the 1-0 Centre advantage.
Weigel and Katherine Wight led the Eagles with four shots each. The Bridgewater defense continued its strong early-season play, limiting the Colonels to just two shots on goal.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday afternoon when the Eagles host Methodist University at 4:00 p.m.
