The Virginia women’s basketball team (13-11, 3-7 ACC) hosts RV/No. 22 Syracuse (18-6, 8-3 ACC) on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
The game will be televised live on the ACC Regional Sports Networks with Tom Werme and Debbie Antonelli calling the action. Additionally, all of the 2015-16 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA and streaming online at wina.com and VirginiaSports.com with Channing Poole and Chelsea Shine Wilson calling the action.
Virginia is trying to snap a five-game losing streak, UVA’s longest slide since losing five in a row in February of 2013. The Cavaliers have not lost six-straight since the 2005-06 season.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 66-46 loss to Virginia Tech last Sunday. Junior Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) scored a team-high 14 points against the Hokies. Mason averaged 8.3 points per game in non-conference contests but is averaging 13.0 in ACC games and has scored in double figures in each of the last seven games.
Sophomore Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) scored 13 points against Virginia Tech, her 13th double-digit scoring effort of the season, but just her second since January 11. Moses also took a season-high 15 shots against the Hokies. She is averaging 9.4 shots per game overall this season.
Sophomore Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) has scored in double figures in 14 of the last 16 games and is currently ranked seventh in the ACC in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game. Venson also leads the conference in free throw shooting, making 84.6 percent of her attempts.
Virginia leads the ACC in free throw shooting efficiency at 74.7 percent. In the last four games, Virginia is shooting 82.3 percent (42-of-51) from the line including going 21-of-26 against Pitt.
Syracuse, which is receiving votes in this week’s Associated Press poll and is ranked No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, has won its last four games including a 57-51 victory at No. 16 Miami on Feb. 1 and a 71-52 victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday (Feb. 7). The Orange have three players averaging double figures and are led by Alexis Peterson who is averaging 14.6 points per game.
This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams with the series tied 3-3. The Orange have won the last three meetings including a 70-58 victory last year at the Carrier Dome.
Virginia will play at Boston College on Sunday, February 14 at 5 p.m. in a game that will also be broadcast on the ACC Regional Sports Networks before heading to No. 12 Louisville for a Thursday, Feb. 18contest. The Cavaliers will return home to host Clemson on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.
