The Virginia women’s basketball team (2-0, 0-0 ACC) earned an 86-50 victory over Norfolk State (0-2, 0-0 MEAC) on Monday (Nov. 16) at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead in their first home game of the season, going on an 18-0 run spanning the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters to lead 45-23 at halftime.
Senior guard Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.), was one of seven Cavaliers to finish the game in double figures, scoring a game-high 17 points, making six of her nine field goal attempts, with seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Sophomore forward Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) scored 12 points with seven rebounds, two steals and an assist.
“We are really glad to be 2-0 at this point in the season,” said Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle. “We came out and took some really quick shots in the second half which led to some transition points for Norfolk State. I wasn’t pleased with that part, but after that, I thought we moved the ball well. Lauren Moses has been so rock-solid. She’s been stepping her game up, finishing really well and doing a great job defensively and all-around for us.”
Virginia shot 51.6 percent from the field while Norfolk State made 27.3 percent of their shots, hampered by a span of 12-straight missed shots in the first and second quarters.
Norfolk State held a 46-44 rebounding advantage, including grabbing 27 offensive rebounds.
The Cavaliers broke open a 16-9 game with a 12-0 run to close out the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore guard J’Kyra Brown (Rocky Mount, N.C) drained a three-pointer after a layup from Moses. Sophomore guard Aliyah Huland El (Randolph, N.J.) was fouled while scoring a layup, converting the and-one to add three of the points. Randolph followed with a no-look pass from the lane to a wide-open sophomore guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) on the wing with 10 seconds left in the half. The Cavaliers scored the first six points of the second quarter to go up 32-9. Virginia continued building on its lead with an and-one from Brown with 59 seconds left in the third quarter giving UVA a 33-point lead, 62-29.
Huland El, Venson, junior guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) and freshman forward Moné Jones (Durham, N.C.) each scored 10 points while Brown finished with 11. Freshman Emily Battle (Charlottesville, Va.) made her collegiate debut, scoring two points with a rebound in two minutes on the court.
The Cavaliers have won their last 16 home openers and have never lost a home opener at John Paul Jones Arena.
Up next, Virginia will travel to Auburn, Ala., taking on the Tigers on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. ET in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network. Virginia returns home to host Longwood on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.
