Waynesboro Public Library marks National Library Week

library-main2Waynesboro Public Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week from April 14-20, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.  First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the heart of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study.  Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reengage with each other, to enrich and shape the community, and to address local issues.

Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, programs for job seekers or those to support early literacy, librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.

“Service to the community has always been the focus of the library,” said Zahir Mahmoud, Library Director. “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.”

WPL is celebrating National Library Week with fine forgiveness week. Overdue fines will be waived once all late items are returned. Patron Appreciation day will also be held on Wednesday, April 17 with refreshments served all day.

Also during the week, on April 18, WPL will participate in Snapshot Virginia. In April, libraries across Virginia collect information, photos, and patron comments to illustrate the impact Virginia libraries make in their communities every day. Snapshot Day encourages library customers to comment on what their library means to them.

Snapshot Virginia is a project of the Virginia Library Association and Library of Virginia. The goal is to use collected data, such as how many people visit the library, use computers, attend programs, etc., as well as candid photographs and comments, to demonstrate how essential libraries are within our communities.

Be sure to visit the Waynesboro Public Library at 600 S. Wayne Ave. during National Library Week to celebrate and be a part of Snapshot Day. Library hours are 9 am – 9 pm through the week and 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday. For more information, call 942-6746 or see the library’s Web site at www.waynesboropubliclibrary.org.
