policecar3The Waynesboro Police Department has charged two Rockingham County men involved in the February shoplifting at Kmart. Brandon Micah Simmons, 29 years old, and Dakota Lane Whetzel, 24 years old, both face one count of grand larceny.

The Police Department credits the identification of Whetzel and Simmons as the culprits to several of the nearly thirty tipsters who called in after seeing their images depicted in the surveillance footage provided to local media outlets.

Both men were arrested by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office on the evening of March 13.  Whetzel is being held without bond at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Regional Jail; Simmons was released on bond.

Previous Release – March 2, 2015: The Waynesboro Police Department is requesting assistance in identifying to two men involved in a felony shoplifting from Kmart, 2712 West Main Street, last month.  On February 9, 2015, two men entered the store and began selecting several articles of men’s apparel including hunting, i.e. camouflage, and work clothes.  After they walked out the front entrance of the store, the loss prevention officer approached them and told them to return to the store.  The men then fled in opposite directions with the stolen items.  Responding police officers were unable to locate them after arriving on scene.

It is estimated that nearly $300 worth of merchandise including five jackets and a wallet were stolen.
