The Waynesboro Generals announced today that D.J. King has been hired as the team’s new head coach.
King is currently an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina-Aiken. A graduate of Shorter (Ga.) College, King also has Division I experience at Kennesaw State (Ga.), a stint at a top junior-college program at Andrew (Ga.) College and one season of summer college baseball experience with the Dubuque Waves of the Mississippi River Valley League.
King will replace Mike Bocock, who led the Generals to their fifth Valley League championship in 2013 before deciding to take the summer of 2014 off from baseball after a 25-year run in the VBL that included eight league championships overall.
“I have some big shoes to fill. He’s been around for a long time, and he’s a well-respected guy all over. Just stepping into those shoes, that’s high expectations right off the bat,” King said.
King was selected from among a deep pool of qualified candidates who expressed interest in the position after Bocock stepped down last month.
“D.J. comes with high recommendations from people he’s worked with, and we have a lot of confidence heading into next season with him at the helm,” said David Gauldin II, the president of the board of directors of Waynesboro Amateur Athletics, the non-profit parent organization of the Waynesboro Generals.
King and new general manager Tyler Hoffman have been working to put together a roster for 2014 that the two hope will do a fair job of representing the defending VBL champs on the diamond.
“Obviously the expectations are to win. I’ve been working really close with our GM to put together a quality product, a combination of some Division II and Division I guys, that come from winning programs and winning backgrounds,” King said.
