vmi_logo2VMI baseball has earned the #4 seed for next week’s SoCon Tournament, and will face the #5 UNCG Spartans at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, May 20, at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. It will be VMI’s first appearance in the main draw of a conference tournament since 2010, and the team accomplished the feat after having been voted last in the league’s preseason poll.

When the Keydets and Spartans do battle Wednesday, it will mark just 10 days since the teams concluded a three-game series in Lexington. VMI won two of three and was in position for a sweep late in game three before the Spartans rallied to take the finale. Wednesday’s game will also mark the second postseason meeting between VMI and UNCG, as the Spartans beat the Keydets, 10-1, to conclude VMI’s last SoCon Tournament appearance in 2003.

Since 1991, VMI has only been seeded higher than this year’s #4 seed once, in the 2008 Big South Tournament, while the Keydets were also seeded fourth on one other occasion during their stay in the Big South (2007). In addition to that 2007 season, the Keydets were seeded fourth in the 1989 and 1990 SoCon Tournaments, but the team is looking for its first win in a conference tournament when being seeded in the #4 position.

The winner of the game, the tournament’s game #5, will play at either 5 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. Thursday against the winner of #1 Mercer vs. the victor of the Tuesday’s play-in between #8 The Citadel and #9 ETSU. The two losers of those games play at 12:30 p.m.

All games of the tournament will be available live and free of charge on the SoCon Digital Network, with the exception of the championship, which can be seen on ESPN3. There will also be audio broadcasts on VMIKeydets.com and WREL 1450 AM in the Lexington area for each of VMI’s games.
