VMI football scrimmage report

vmi footballVMI Football held the first of the three spring football scrimmages Saturday on a sun-splashed afternoon at Foster Stadium. VMI head coach Scott Wachenheim offered the following observations after the scrimmage.

“We had terrific weather and full officiating crew for Spring practice number 8 in Foster Stadium. We live scrimmaged 54 snaps of offensive and defensive football. Additionally we got repetitions in all phases of special teams play.”

“I was impressed with the way the offense executed. We had zero misalignments and very few penalties. Chima Kpaduwa and Quan Myers ran the ball hard. Devone Humphrey, Kris Thornton, Ro Martian, and Javion Lara showed the potential to be a dynamic force as receivers for us. Quarterbacks Reece Udinski and Austin Caulling both made solid decisions all day.”

“The defense was running to the football with a passion. We were efficient tacklers throughout the scrimmage. Elliott Brewster led the way making several tackles and once again showed his athletic ability in intercepting and ball and returning it for a touchdown. Devin Carper showed outstanding leadership and constantly encouraged his teammates to play with a purpose. A.J. Smith stepped up and made several solid one on one tackles.”

“I look forward to evaluating the video with the coaching staff to look for ways we can continue to improve as a football team next week.”

Coach Wachenheim will be an in-game guest during the third inning on Sunday’s VMI-Furman baseball broadcast on ESPN3 and will talk about spring practice to date.

VMI resumes drills next week with practices scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and a second scrimmage set for Saturday at Foster Stadium beginning at 1:30 pm.
