VMI baseball opens three-game series with The Citadel on Friday

Contributors

vmiVMI baseball will return to action Friday, when the Keydets open Southern Conference action against their archrivals, The Citadel Bulldogs. First pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m., with action Saturday and Sunday to follow at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.

How to Follow

Fans can follow along with video streaming for all three games. The Friday and Saturday games can be seen live on the SoCon Digital Network, while Sunday’s game will be accessible on ESPN3 (with participating provider).

Augusta Free Press editor Chris Graham will join Wade Branner on the ESPN3 broadcast team for Sunday’s game.

Probable Starting Pitchers

VMI RHP Matthew Eagle vs. CIT RHP JP Sears
VMI LHP Brandon Barbery vs. CIT RHP Thomas Byelick
VMI RHP Josh Winder vs. CIT RHP Jacob Watcher

Notes

The Keydets have won six of the last seven games against the Bulldogs, dating back to 2003. That is the best run VMI has ever had against The Citadel, in records that date back to 1955, but it includes The Citadel’s 10-5 win last season in the SoCon Tournament that ended VMI’s 2015 campaign.

In starting the March 23 game at Old Dominion, Nathan Eaton became the first regular VMI position player to also start multiple games as a pitcher since current Oakland farmhand Sam Roberts did so in 2011.

Since his batting average fell to a season-low .141 after March 15’s loss to VCU, shortstop Jacob Jaye has raised that figure 44 points by going 8 for 21 (.381). Jaye has also driven in six of the nine runs he has plated this season during that time.

Next Time Out

Following the weekend series, the Keydets play host to Virginia Tech Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a game that will also be available on ESPN3.

Graham and Branner will have the call for ESPN3 for the VMI-Virginia Tech game.
